I’ve been an avid backpacker for several years. Few things are better than spending time in the outdoors, whether it’s deep in the woods or wandering through a desert. Having the right backpack is key to having a safe, enjoyable journey.
After my last pack started to rip along the seam, I decided it was time to get a replacement for my old friend. It didn’t take long for me to find the Osprey Farpoint 40 55 70 backpacks. These are high quality packs that seem practically indestructible. I expect to keep this one for at least a decade, if not longer.

Main Features You Need to Know
Most of the backpacks in this Osprey line are actually two packs in one. You get a large pack for long walks and a small pack for walking around urban areas. The two fit together to give you all the room you need for a really long hike. It comes in a variety of sizes that I’ve listed below. You just have to choose the one that’s right for you.
All of the Osprey Farpoint 40 55 70 backpacks are made from 10 double rip nylon and 600D poly pack cloth. I don’t really expect everyone to know exactly what that means. You just have to know that these are some of the highest quality materials. Anything much tougher than this would feel like carrying a burlap sack. With the nylon and poly pack cloth, you get strength and comfort.
The packs have plenty of places for you to attach the items you need for a long hike. If you’ve ever done real backpacking, you know that some of your items don’t actually go in your pack. You fasten them to the outside. With these packs, you can add commonly used items through a system of loops and straps. Feel free to load up as much as you can carry. These Ospreys won’t rip under pressure.
Thankfully, Osprey knew to put a thick layer of mesh on along the pack’s back panel. With a little help from the LightWire suspension system, you can carry more than you think possible without feeling to uncomfortable.
If you find that you have too much room in your pack, you can just use the compression straps to shrink it. That prevents it from waving around behind you as you walk.

Each Osprey Farpoint has slightly different product specifications to meet your unique needs. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of each to decide which one you want to buy.
Osprey Farpoint 40
The Farpoint 40 is a 21 X 13 X 9 inch backpack with a carry capacity between 30 and 40 liters. It weighs about two pounds, 15 ounces, which is easy to carry on your shoulders. It comes in lagoon blue and mud red colors.
Osprey Farpoint 55
The Farpoint 55 is actually a main backpack and a daypack. The main backpack has a carry capacity of about 55 liters. The daypack’s capacity is between 15 and 20 liters. It weighs 4.6 pounds and measures 13 X 24 X 17 inches. You can get it in several colors, including mud red, peat brown, charcoal gray, and lagoon blue.
Osprey Farpoint 70
The Farpoint 70 is also a combination pack. The main pack can carry an impressive 70 liters. The daypack has a capacity of 15 to 25 liters. It weighs 4.7 pounds and measures 18 X 26 X 14 inches. It’s available in the same colors as the Farpoint 55.
Interesting Features
If I were a younger man, this is the backpack I would choose for travelling across the continent. The main pack has compartments of various sizes where you can store all of your belongings. When you’re ready to walk around town, you can leave the main pack at the hotel or hostel without abandoning your most important documents, money, and other necessities.
Even the small rucksack has good compartments for storing items safely. If you need it, you can even use the rucksack’s hip belt.
When the time comes, this would make a great graduation present for my son.
Room for Improvement
Unfortunately, the Osprey Farpoint 40 55 70 backpacks do not have a hydration port that lets you sip water while you hike. That seems like a strange feature for the company to miss, especially considering all of the great features included in the design. If you need to attach a water pouch or bottle, you’ll have to use the backpack’s loops to secure it during your hike.

This is a great backpack for all kinds of adventures. The small oversight of not including a hydration point is a little annoying, but it’s not a deal breaker. Overall, this is one of the best two-in-one backpacks you can find for the price.
